This post originated from our 1000,000th FLMI celebration that took place in 2015. In honor of Life Insurance Awareness Month this year, we'd like to share this story with you.

We often hear about FLMI designees who go on to become leaders in their organizations. Here are a few who tell us about their journey:

Having joined the insurance industry in 1991, I was immediately intrigued by its many moving parts. While I was employed in the Investment arm of my insurance company, I wanted to know how all of the various sections of the company functioned and how they all worked together to provide the benefits and services to our ultimate clients. I was encouraged to enroll in the LOMA course, which at that time were offered through manual means, with limited courses offerings from period to period.

I found the courses extremely rewarding as they helped to provide a perfect backdrop of the industry. I was able to successfully complete my FLMI with Honors within two years and served as a catalyst for others within my organization to become enthused in the LOMA program once again. I have used my knowledge from my FLMI designation to attain numerous positions within the insurance industry over the years, from Investments, to Pensions, to Life and Health Operations, to my current position as President. I can say without fear of contradiction that my FLMI designation has served me well over the last 22 years and has helped to propel me to heights that I would not have achieved otherwise.

Lyrone Burrows, FLMI (Hons), ACS
President, Family Guardian Insurance Co. Ltd.

When I went to work with Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company’s home office in Jackson, MS, I was hired to work in the commission’s accounting department. I had little knowledge of the insurance industry; however, my position was one of accounting so great knowledge of insurance didn’t mean a lot to me. Nevertheless, it was obvious that to excel with the company, I needed a broad knowledge of the insurance world and began my endeavor to attain the FLMI designation. My company is so encouraging to its employees by offering the many courses for the FLMI as well as other educational tools and incentives to advance one’s knowledge of the insurance industry. At the time, I was 50 years old and set out to prove that you can still learn even at an advanced age.

Attaining the FLMI and several other designations gave me the confidence and qualifications that I needed to apply for more advanced positions. I have had several promotions and would have never been qualified to apply for these positions had I not set a goal to further my education and career. Thanks to a great company for its support and to FLMI for providing this valuable educational asset.

Shirley Anderson, FLMI, ACS, AIAA
Senior Executive Assistant, Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company

Obtaining the FLMI designation has armed me to take on various challenges with a level of confidence that I did not have before. The LOMA courses provide an excellent foundation for the basic understanding and overview of all aspects of the insurance business – something that one isn’t exposed to in one’s daily working life.

Having my FLMI has assisted me in obtaining my current position as Senior eUnderwriting Consultant as it demonstrates a commitment to a career path in the insurance industry.
