Consumer demand for speed, convenience and simplified purchasing experiences continues to reshape the life insurance market, driving growth in simplified issue life insurance products. According to findings from LIMRA’s recent deep dive, simplified issue life insurance has evolved from a niche offering into an increasingly important component of insurers’ growth strategies, particularly among underserved and middle-market consumers.

The study, based on responses from 18 carriers actively offering simplified issue products, found strong optimism regarding the future of the market. More than 80% of carriers reported increased demand for simplified issue products over the past two to three years, and 77% of carriers expect additional growth in the future, further reflecting broader consumer preferences for digital solutions and reduced application friction.

Unlike traditionally underwritten life insurance, simplified issue products typically eliminate medical exams and rely on streamlined health questionnaires, prescription drug histories and electronic data sources to make underwriting decisions. The result is a faster and more convenient buying experience that appeals to consumers seeking coverage without the delays and complexity associated with full underwriting.

Whole Life Leads

While simplified issue products are available across several product lines, whole life insurance remains the market's strongest growth engine. The research found that simplified issue products account for 36% of whole life policy sales, far exceeding their share in term life and indexed universal life (IUL). On a premium basis, simplified issue products represent 18% of whole life premium compared to just 7% of term premium and 5% of IUL premium.

The discrepancy between policy counts and premium volume underscores one of the defining characteristics of the simplified issue market: These products are reaching a significant number of consumers but are generally sold with smaller face amounts than fully underwritten products.

Among carriers offering multiple simplified issue products, final expense whole life stands out as the clear growth leader. More than half of respondents identified final expense products as their top contributor to both premium growth and policy growth. The findings suggest that consumers continue to value the ability to obtain coverage quickly and easily for end-of-life expenses without navigating extensive underwriting requirements.

The Cost of Convenience

The primary value proposition of simplified issue insurance is straightforward: fewer underwriting requirements, no medical exams and faster decisions. However, these benefits generally come with a trade-off.

Most carriers reported that simplified issue products are priced above comparable fully underwritten offerings. The differences are particularly pronounced in IUL, where all carriers indicated simplified issue premiums are higher than those for comparable fully underwritten products. Similar results were reported for term insurance (82%), other whole life such as nonjuvenile and nonfinal expense (88%), and final expense whole life (67%).

Higher pricing reflects the additional uncertainty carriers must assume when underwriting decisions rely on limited health information, prescription data, third-party databases and predictive analytics rather than longer applications, medical exams and laboratory testing. Along with higher premium costs, carriers also manage risk through face amount caps, issue age limits and other product management strategies. Despite advances in underwriting technology, most companies reported less favorable long-term experience for simplified issue business, including higher early-duration claims, higher ultimate mortality and elevated first-year lapse rates compared with fully underwritten business.

The Speed Advantage

Speed remains one of the strongest selling points of simplified issue life insurance. The study found that most carriers can issue decisions on many of these products in less than one day. Two-thirds of final expense carriers reported average application-to-decision cycle times of one day or less, while roughly half of term, juvenile whole life and IUL carriers reported similarly short turnaround times.

Advancements in data analytics and automated underwriting have fueled much of this efficiency. Medical Information Bureau (MIB) reports and prescription drug databases are among the most widely utilized underwriting resources across simplified issue product lines. Many carriers also supplement decisions with health risk scores, medical claims data, identity verification checks and predictive analytics.

The speed advantage is further reflected in the widespread use of instant decisioning. For most simplified issue product categories, approximately three-quarters of carriers approve at least half of their business through instant decisions. Final expense products lead the industry in this area, with half of participating carriers reporting that every approved policy is issued through an instant decision process.

Agents Remain Essential

While simplified issue products often emphasize digital capabilities and automation, the study confirms that agents remain deeply involved in the sales process.

The majority of carriers reported requiring agent involvement prior to application submission for most simplified issue products. Agents help consumers understand coverage options, navigate eligibility requirements and set realistic expectations regarding underwriting outcomes.

According to participating carriers, the biggest challenges agents face are explaining higher premiums relative to fully underwritten products and addressing lower maximum coverage amounts. Nearly half also reported that consumers frequently assume a simplified application guarantees approval, creating an additional educational responsibility during the sales process.

Looking Ahead

Carrier sentiment toward the future of simplified issue life insurance remains overwhelmingly positive. Most participants expect continued growth and believe that advances in underwriting technology will gradually blur the distinction between simplified issue and fully underwritten products over the next decade.

As carriers continue to refine data-driven underwriting capabilities and consumers increasingly favor quick, digital purchasing experiences, simplified issue products are well positioned to play a larger role in the life insurance marketplace. While traditional underwriting will continue to serve consumers seeking larger face amounts and preferred pricing, simplified issue products are proving their value by expanding access and reducing barriers to purchase.
