Highlights

We are experiencing significant change across our industry’s landscape, but today’s leaders have the power to forge the future. Forging the future involves actively shaping the world by taking deliberate actions that align with our vision and values. It means anticipating challenges and opportunities, and preparing ourselves to tackle them with creativity and resilience. Today’s leaders must identify and shape the elements in our business that will lead to success. What are these elements of change?

Several macroeconomic trends have been causing industry players to rethink their operating models. These include the challenges brought by inflation, the looming threat of a recession and the cost of living crisis, the rise in interest rates, and the resulting fluctuation in the equity markets. Leaders who continuously evaluate their business operations will ensure value creation and long-term success.

The geopolitical environment cannot be ignored, as it will influence our strategies. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its impact on energy prices, global fragmentation and the erosion of social cohesion, supply chain shocks, and changing climate agreements provide the troublesome backdrop of our current environment. Although, we can’t predict what the disruptive events will be, we can create organizations that can not only survive these events, but also thrive.

Technology trends may be the most transformational force of our time. Every aspect of our industry’s ecosystem is under pressure, whether it be pre and post sale processes, employee benefit enrollment, or customer acquisition. Traditional insurers are not sitting idly by. Instead, they are innovating and trying new things so they can compete with tech upstarts. In the near future, the fully tech-enabled insurer will bear little resemblance to today’s organization.

Difficulties recruiting and retaining talent have reached an all-time high. Perhaps the most critical aspect of our talent challenge is distribution and attracting new producers. We must do a better job of communicating our industry’s value and purpose, which are powerful motivators for younger prospects.

These and other issues will be addressed at LIMRA’s 2023 Annual Conference. Our program features thought leaders and forward-thinking executives. We will discuss key strategies in these areas of opportunities that will influence the future of our industry and the markets we serve, including: distribution, data and technology, talent imperatives, and other strategic issues within insurance, annuities, and worksite benefits.

Keynote Speaker

The Rt. Hon. Dame Jacinda Ardern
Prime Minister of New Zealand (2017-2023); Senior Fellow, Harvard University; Special Envoy, Christchurch Call; Board Member, The Earthshot Prize

The Rt. Hon. Dame Jacinda Ardern

Prime Minister of New Zealand (2017-2023); Senior Fellow, Harvard University; Special Envoy, Christchurch Call; Board Member, The Earthshot Prize

The Right Honourable Dame Jacinda Ardern became the Prime Minister of New Zealand at just 37 years of age. During her time in office she faced the challenges of a live streamed domestic terror attack against New Zealand’s Muslim community, a volcanic eruption and the COVID 19 pandemic. Ms Ardern’s focus on people, kindness and what she has called “pragmatic idealism” saw New Zealand achieve some of the lowest losses of life experienced by any developed nation through the pandemic, the ban of military style semi-automatic weapons in her country, and the creation of the Christchurch Call to Action to eliminate violent extremism online, which Ms Ardern continues to hold the role of Special Envoy.

Ms Ardern is a champion of woman's empowerment. While in office, New Zealand reached 50 percent representation of women in parliament, and on government appointed boards. She decriminalised abortion, improved pay equity laws and extended paid parental leave to 6 months — all while being only the second woman in the world to have a baby while leading her country.

Ms Ardern is a passionate advocate on climate action and is a board member of The Earthshot Prize, focusing on solutions to climate change and environmental issues.

Ms Ardern is the 2023 Angelopoulos Global Public Leaders Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Hauser Leader in the School’s Center for Public Leadership, a program where leaders from public, private, and nonprofit sectors engage with students and faculty on building skills in principled leadership. She is also the Knight Tech Governance Leadership Fellow at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, where she will focus on ways to improve content standards and platform accountability for extremist content online.

Ms Ardern holds an Honorary Doctorate from Harvard University.

One of the most effective military leaders in recent U.S. history, General David H. Petraeus — a highly decorated four-star general whose distinguished 37-year military career culminated in six commands as a general officer (five of which were combat) — addresses the most significant global challenges facing us today, including ongoing international security issues, macroeconomic trends, and the tasks of strategic leaders.

Widely credited for changing the course of two wars — by dramatically reducing the violence in Iraq when he led the so-called “Surge” and by halting the Taliban’s momentum in Afghanistan when he led the coalition there — Petraeus served in multiple campaigns — including nearly seven years deployed following 9-11 — and has been described as one of the “great battle captains of American history.”

Petraeus subsequently led the CIA, where he oversaw significant achievements in America’s global counterterrorism campaign. Petraeus has received numerous decorations including four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger tab, master parachutist wings, medals from 14 foreign countries. He has been runner-up for “Time” magazine’s Person of the Year, “Prospect” magazine’s Public Intellectual of the Year, three times a “Foreign Policy” magazine top public intellectual, and the only person, while in uniform, to throw out the first pitch of a World Series game and do the coin toss at a Super Bowl.

He graduated with distinction from USMA, earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University, and has held numerous academic appointments.
