Professor Abel completed his medical training at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine, a Bachelor of Surgery, a Doctorate in Psychiatry and a Master’s in Public Health, and is currently a Professor and Head of the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry at The UWI Mona Campus. He is also the Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Abel has been a policy advisor and advocate for mental health in Jamaica and the Caribbean for many years and has written more than 83 journal articles as well as several technical reports and book chapters which focus on a range of mental health issues.  He has played a critical role in shaping public policy for persons living with all disabilities, and has worked with agencies such as the Organisation of American States (OAS), Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), the European Union (EU) and CARICOM. This work has in turn helped to facilitate several policy and programme initiatives such as the integration of mental health into education and primary health care, drug and violence prevention and treatment, and marijuana policy reform. In recognition of his work in the medical and mental health fields, he has been awarded numerous recognitions including the Order of Distinction in 2007, and most recently The Vice Chancellor’s Award (UWI) for Community Service (2018), and the GLEANER AWARD – Health & Wellness (2018).

Butch Bacani leads UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Principles for Sustainable Insurance Initiative (PSI), the largest collaboration between the UN and the insurance industry. Endorsed by the UN Secretary-General and insurance industry CEOs, the PSI is a global framework and initiative for the industry to address sustainability issues—as risk managers, insurers and investors—and to build resilient, inclusive and sustainable communities and economies on a healthy planet.

Butch leads initiatives that contribute to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement, Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include creating the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance, supporting the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), convening the world’s leading insurers to pilot the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), championing nature-positive insurance, aligning insurance portfolios with the SDGs, creating a Sustainable Insurance Facility with V20 finance ministers for the most climate-vulnerable countries, and working with the California Insurance Commissioner to develop the world’s first sustainable insurance roadmap. He co-led the development of the first global ESG guides for non-life and life & health insurance business, the creation of the UN-convened Sustainable Insurance Forum for regulators and supervisors, and forged the PSI’s partnership with the world’s inclusive insurance community. Butch was part of InsuranceERM’s inaugural list of the most influential people leading and shaping the insurance industry’s response to climate change.

Butch led the global process that created the PSI in 2012, and UNEP’s insurance and investment programmes from 2006 to 2010, including activities with the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). He has shaped global insurance industry initiatives to address climate change and disaster risks, nature loss, plastic pollution, environmental pollution liability, illegal fishing, and tobacco risks; and to protect UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Butch has authored pioneering studies on sustainable insurance and responsible investment. Prior to the UN, he was in the insurance industry for over a decade, working with leading insurers and reinsurers worldwide.

Butch is also involved in the UNFCCC’s work on loss and damage, InsuResilience Global Partnership, Insurance Development Forum, California Climate Insurance Working Group, Microinsurance Network, European Commission’s Climate Resilience Dialogue, and World Benchmarking Alliance.

James Fletcher was the Minister for Public Service, Information, Broadcasting, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology in Saint Lucia from 2011 to 2016.  During his tenure, he led an aggressive modernization of the energy sector, established modern ICT centres in several under-served communities, initiated the program for free island-wide Wi-Fi, developed a 311 call centre for information on public service matters, and established an Employee Assistance Programme to provide free, confidential counselling to public officers. 

James also played a leading role in the Caribbean’s ‘1.5 to Stay Alive’ civil society campaign was selected by the COP President to be part of the ministerial team that helped to achieve consensus on the elements of the Paris Agreement. He was recognized by Global Optimism in Profiles of Paris as a key player in creating the historic Paris Agreement, and in 2019, he was selected by the United Kingdom’s Chevening Scholarship Program as one of 35 Global Changemakers.  James currently manages his own company, SOLORICON, and in 2020, he launched The Caribbean Climate Justice Project, which advocates for climate justice for the people most impacted by climate change. He holds a PhD degree from the University of Cambridge.

Mr. Halsall has spent more than 40 years leading the development of Information Technology in Jamaica, and is credited with introducing computer services to Jamaica’s banking, credit union, retail, hospitality & tourism, and health insurance industries, as well as the design and implementation of the Government’s current Budgetary and Accounting system. Other notable achievements include implementing the first ATM on the island, introducing the first online, real time health insurance adjudication system in the Caribbean, developing an Electronic Medical Records system for Jamaica, assisting with the conceptualization and development of the National Health Fund, and managing the digitization of the University Hospital of the West Indies. Prior to starting AIS, Mr. Halsall served as Chairman and CEO of NCR Jamaica for 10 years where he was responsible for moving NCR Jamaica to the position of leading country across Latin America and the Caribbean in performance and sales. In 2005, the Government of Jamaica, supported by the Opposition, recognized his contribution to Technology by conferring on him the prestigious Order of Distinction, one of Jamaica's highest National honors.

Dr. Axel Kravatzky is Managing Partner of Syntegra-ESG, advising and guiding leaders on how to develop, activate and amplify the power of their brand and people to positively impact society and the natural environment profitably.  As the practice lead for Integrated Governance and Strategy he has been working with Boards of Directors, Board Committees and Executives for over 20 years. His specialties are the financial, state-owned enterprise, utilities, and non-for-profit sectors.  Axel was the founding Chairman of the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute (CCGI) and lead the development of the first and only accredited Corporate Governance training programme in the Caribbean region.  Axel is currently the Vice Chair of ISO/TC309 Governance of Organizations, serves as the co-convener and technical editor for ISO/TC309/WG1 which developed the global benchmark on good organizational governance: “ISO 37000:2021 Governance of Organizations — Guidance”, and is the project leader of “ISO 37006 Indicators of effective organizational governance – Guidance”.

Her previous tenures include leadership positions at Manulife Financial, Clarica Life Insurance and Mutual Life. Throughout her 11+ years career at Sun Life, she has led several teams focused on helping advisors and distribution partners in their efforts to grow sales, optimize processes and support large and complex cases.  Annalee brings to the Equisoft Board a long and successful career of driving growth, operational improvement and innovation, as well as extensive knowledge in multi-line business development, product development and operations management.

Charles van Oppen is co-owner and director of London-based risk management consultancy TBIAS Ltd with its tech JV ERM360.  Charles specialises in good governance, insurance business management and enterprise risk management.  Working with his colleagues, Charles designs and delivers risk, governance, compliance and insurance data solutions for multinational companies and insurance businesses.  Charles has worked in the Lloyd’s and London Insurance Markets since 1988 and has focused on solutions for Caribbean customers since 2014.  Charles’ qualifications include a BA (Distinction) in Risk Management from Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, an MA in Development Studies from University of East Anglia, Norwich, and Fellow of the Institute of Civil Protection and Emergency Management (ICPEM). Charles lives in Suffolk, UK and is a frequent visitor to the Caribbean region.

Senator the Hon. L. Ryan Pinder was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affair of The Bahamas on September 20, 2021. He was previously a Member of Parliament (MP) from 2010 to 2017 and is an attorney by profession, admitted to the Florida Bar as a Board Certified Tax Attorney in 2000 and Bahamas Bar in 2009.  Before assuming office as a Cabinet minister in 2012, Minister Pinder served as an international tax and commercial consultant in the firm of OL Private Corporate Counsel Ltd. His portfolio included advising international corporations on merger and acquisition transactions, international commercial tax structures and preparing international tax policy.

Additionally, prior to May 2012, Minister Pinder also served as a tax consultant at Becker & Poliakoff, P.A. He was also the managing shareholder for the Nassau, Bahamas office. His responsibilities included establishing the firm's Nassau, Bahamas office, providing offshore tax planning for US clients, providing representation for US clients conducting business in The Bahamas and providing representation for Bahamian clients conducting business in the US.  He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Miami and the University’s College of Law including: LL.M., J.D., M.B.A. and B.B.A.

Frank has been a Senior Vice President in the North American Treaty Division at Hannover Re since 2011. He has more than 20 years of experience in the Reinsurance industry. Frank joined Hannover Re in 2001 as a US Property Treaty Underwriter, shortly afterwards his role was extended to include Casualty lines. From 2005-2008 he worked as an Assistant to the CUO North America and also the CUO Worldwide. From 2009-2011 Frank was seconded to Johannesburg, South Africa and worked as a Senior Portfolio Manager for a subsidiary of the Hannover Re Group South Africa, that invests into MGAs.

Frank is responsible for all Caribbean P&C Treaty business for Hannover Re. As the Chairman of the Canadian Branch Steering Board he also oversees all Canadian Treaty business. Furthermore, Frank is in charge of North American Agency & Digital as well as all Nuclear business (on a worldwide basis). In addition, Frank is responsible for US Medical Malpractice business and sits on the Board of Glencar Insurance Company in the US.

Dr. Colin A. Young, a Belizean national, is the Executive Director of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (CCCCC) headquartered in Belize SINCE January 2020. Pr ior to hi s appointment at the CCCCC, Dr. Young served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Social Security Board, a parastatal entity that administers Belize’s Social Security Fund from 2017 to 2019 were he championed contribution reform, technology transformation and numerous legislative changes. Dr. Young also served as the CEO in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, the Environment, Sustainable Development where he had overall responsibilities for all of the portfolios, including climate change, other than agriculture as well as the CEO in the Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology and Public Utilities from 2012-2015. Dr. Young has served on numerous boards including the Green Climate Fund, a financial mechanism under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. He holds both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Connecticut in the United States.
