Harry Heaton
State Farm

Harry Heaton, Senior Research Analyst for State Farm Insurance Companies, is no stranger to learning…or to the rewards that accrue to a “continual learner.” Over a nearly 25-year career with his company, he’s worked in Underwriting, Corporate Training, and currently monitors Competitive Intelligence from his office in Atlanta. Along the way, he’s built a strong foundation of knowledge and garnered an enviable roster of designations: CPCU, CLU, AIM, AIC, ChFC and, in a fitting finale most recently, the Fellow, Life Management Institute™ (FLMI®). Harry neither aimed for, nor expected, to become the recipient of LOMA’s milestone 100,000th FLMI designation. Rather, earning his FLMI was the latest in a series of efforts to “continue to grow” because “when you stop learning, you stop growing!”

Heaton had a fairly aggressive two-year plan when he began the FLMI in 2013. He structured his studies around the various aspects of the online course portals, paying very close attention to the sample study questions and the popular “Top 10 Tough Topics” section that accompanies all of the online designation courses. According to Heaton, “the format and set-up are so easy to follow and the study materials are laid out well—it’s very user friendly.” Heaton completed the exam that earned him the distinguished designation in April of this year; he scored in the 90s on all but two tests, and those were near misses of the 90 benchmark he sets for himself. Heaton looks forward to his conferral this September at the LOMA Annual Conference in Boston and to pursuing additional LOMA courses and programs growing forward.
