Joseph Dahl and Susie Cour-Palais, as the new chair and vice-chair of the LOMA International Underwriting Congress (IUC). “We are thrilled to have two experienced industry leaders at the helm of the IUC program,” stated Joel V. Basarich, Ph.D., FLMI, ACS, vice president and managing director, LOMA’s International Division. “Joe has years of hands-on, industry experience and Susie has her eye on the technology and trends impacting the field of underwriting. In combining their diverse expertise, we have two leaders with their fingers on the pulse of what’s happening and what delegates want to hear about. Together, they can take this event to the next level and make sure the program is cutting-edge from a global perspective.” C. Joseph Dahl joined Sun Life in 1962 and was responsible for risk selection policy throughout the Company's world-wide organization. He retired as Vice-President, Underwriting in January 2006 and continues to work with Sun Life as an Underwriting Consultant, heavily focused on start-up operations in India, and offshore operations in Bermuda. Dahl was the 2002 recipient of the prestigious Emmett Russell Award for his contribution to the underwriting profession and insurance industry. He was strategically involved in the formation of the Underwriters Association of the Philippines and is the past president of CHOLUA (CIU), HOLUA and chair of the Life Education Committee and Nomination Committee of IHOU. Dahl was a founding member of both the Underwriting Association of Toronto and the ALU Board, a member of the Board of Head Office Reference Laboratory and the Medical Information Bureau and currently, he chairs LOMA’s education and training council. Susie Cour-Palais is director and co-founder of SelectX Ltd., a London-based underwriting consulting firm to the life and health insurance industry, with clients in the UK and Ireland, continental Europe, North America, Asia and South Africa. Prior to establishing a consultancy business in 1998, Cour-Palais spent 12 years working for Swiss Re Life & Health in various parts of the world, including senior roles as Risk Manager for Asia Pacific markets and Medical Research Manager in the UK. Her underwriting interests are extensive and she brings a global perspective to many issues. As a Consultant she has specialized in advising companies on teleunderwriting, underwriting engine design and use, risk selection strategy, the right to underwrite and genetics, underwriting manual development, operational reviews and audits, product development, particularly critical illness, and training programs. She is a frequent speaker at industry meetings worldwide and has presented at the International Congress of Life Assurance Medicine (ICLAM), numerous Society of Actuaries seminars and at both the 2003 and 2005 IUC.
