Insurance Immersion Instructors
The facilitator for the program is a LOMA staff person and life insurance industry expert who will act as the master of ceremonies for the program by providing logistical information to participants and instructors, introducing instructors, presenting portions of the program content, and managing the classroom environment.
LOMA’s facilitators will be responsible for
- ensuring that class sessions progress smoothly
- answering participant questions about basic program concepts
- managing the time so that sessions run on schedule
- leading activities by providing instructions and guidelines for participants
Kevin Head, Ph.D., FLMI, FFSI, ACS
Kevin Head is currently Director of Instructional Design in LOMA’s Education and Training division. He is responsible for managing the content, instructional design, and delivery of LOMA’s instructor-led training programs. Prior to leading instructor-led training, Kevin worked on textbook projects, including Life and Health Insurance Marketing and Personal Financial Planning. Kevin began working at LOMA in June 2007 after several years in the fields of counseling and ministry. He brings more than 20 years of experience as a group facilitator and instructor to the Insurance Immersion program. Kevin earned a B.A. degree from Furman University and holds Master’s and Doctor’s degrees in counseling.
Jennifer Herrod, FLMI, PCS, AIAA, PAHM, ARA, AIRC
Jen is a Senior Associate in LOMA’s Education and Training division. She is currently responsible for facilitating LOMA’s Insurance Immersion and virtual interactive classroom programs. Prior to joining the Immersion team, Jen worked on textbook development projects including Life and Health Insurance Marketing, Claim Administration, and Reinsurance Administration. She also worked on LOMA’s early e-learning initiatives. Jen has 10 years of classroom teaching experience. She is a graduate of Bowdoin College.
Marvin joined LOMA in 2008 after over 25 years in the insurance industry. He began his career at the Aetna Life and Casualty as a Field Claims Representative. His varied experience includes responsibility as a Regional Liability Claims Manager, Home Office Cost Containment Manager and Claims Operations Project Manager for several top tier Insurance Companies. Marvin has earned a BS in Business Administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
At LOMA, Marvin works in our Management Solutions Group. His focus is within our Information Technology area, where he is a liaison to several LOMA sponsored Insurance Technology Committees. He participates in all phases of business development and marketing for the departments products and services.
The instructors are industry experts who have considerable knowledge and experience in the area of the program for which he or she is responsible. The instructor’s role is to present a “real world” perspective by providing specific examples from personal experience to illustrate the industry concepts covered in the program. The instructors provide comments and feedback to participants during group activities and discussions.
Cathy Ho, ASA
Cathy, who joined LIMRA in 2009, is a research actuary in the Product Research team. She is responsible for the individual life, disability income, and long-term care persistency studies as well as various product design and development research that respond to the needs of LIMRA’s various constituencies. Cathy serves as a resource on industry performance measures to LIMRA staff, member companies, and the media. In addition she is staff representative to LIMRA’s Reinsurance Study Group and is a liaison to various other committees and study groups. Cathy is a graduate of Cornell University.
Lin Ingram, CLU, ChFC, ACS
Lin Ingram has over 30 years of experience in the life insurance industry. He currently serves as Senior Vice President, Life Customer Service and Claims for the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. He has served on a number of industry committees and currently serves as the chair of LOMA's Education Council.
Lin's insurance career has been focused on operational areas and he has managed customer service, claims, new business and underwriting, licensing/appointments, agent commission processing as well as continuous improvement. He has significant experience in assimilating operations from life insurance company mergers and acquisitions.
He holds a BA in Economics from N.C. State University and an MBA from the University of N.C. at Greensboro. His professional designations include Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Associate Customer Service (ACS) and is FINRA licensed as a Series 6 and Series 26.
Donald R. Krouse, FSA, MAAA, CFA, ChFC, CLU, FFSI, FLMI, ACS, AIAA, AIRC, ARA
Donald has been part of the insurance industry for over 17 years. His experience encompasses Pension Plan funding and valuation, U.S. and Foreign Regulatory and Capital Reporting, Asset-Liability Management, Cash Flow Modeling and Financial Projections, Asset Portfolio Management, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Risk Measurement and Management.
Donald is currently Vice President and Appointed Actuary for AEGON USA, with responsibility for all lines of business including traditional whole and term life, universal life, long term care, fixed annuities, variable annuities, reinsurance, retirement products, and structured/institutional products. Donald is currently Secretary of the Investment Section Council of the Society of Actuaries. He is a presenter at Actuarial meetings and has authored or edited articles published in actuarial newsletters such as "The Financial Reporter" and "Risks & Rewards".
He serves on the Textbook Development Panels for the LOMA publications Statistics & Decision Sciences in Information Management and Risk Management and Product Design for Insurance Companies, and on the examination panel for LOMA 371. He is also the liaison for the Society of Actuaries Investment Track examinations.
Donald earned a B.S. in Physics from the University of Alberta, a B.Ed. from the University of Western Ontario and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Actuarial Science from the University of Waterloo.
Jack Miceli, FLMI
Jack Miceli has over 20 years of Industry and Finance experience and is currently the Vice President of Capital and Liquidity Management for AEGON USA in Louisville, Kentucky. Throughout his career, Jack has managed the due diligence, financial analysis and treasury functions for a variety of national and international mergers, acquisitions and divestiture projects. He is well versed at identifying business trends, anticipating potential problems, and developing alternative solutions.
Jack earned a B.S. in Accounting from Auburn University and a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from the University of Hartford. Additionally, Jack holds the FLMI designation and obtained his Six Sigma Executive Green Belt.
Kevin Moyer, FLMI, ACS
Kevin Moyer has over 22 years of insurance, financial services and call center operations experience. Currently, Kevin serves as the Senior Vice President of Operations at the Corporate Call Center. Previous experience has included roles within the service operations of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company as well as Prudential Financial. He has served on the Dalbar, Inc. Advisory Board, LOMA committees, and the National Association of Variable Annuities (NAVA) Operations Committee. He is also a recognized keynote speaker at national industry conferences, a published author, and an adjunct professor at the Lansdale School of Business in Pennsylvania.
Kevin earned a B.S. degree in Management from Bloomsburg University and a Master of Business Administration degree with honors with a concentration in Operations Management from LaSalle University. He also holds insurance and financial services designations, including the FLMI and ACS.
David Parr, FLMI, FLHC, FALU, AIRC, ACS
David has 20 plus years of insurance and financial services experience that spans Underwriting and Claims, and currently serves as a Life Underwriter Manager with Genworth Financial. David joined Genworth as a remote Life Underwriter in 2008 before assuming a leadership role in 2011. Prior to Genworth Financial, David served as Director of Business Development for LOMA from 2006 to 2008 and currently serves as a volunteer instructor and contributor for the Insurance Immersion Program. Prior to joining LOMA, he was Director of Claims and Business Continuity Site Coordinator for ING. In that role, he was responsible for a large claim operation that handled life, health, and disability claims, and responsible for ensuring adequate disaster recovery preparedness for the Atlanta site. Before that role, he led a regional Underwriting team responsible for 40,000 life and health applications per year and servicing over 400 producers.
David graduated with honors from Georgia State University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He received a Master of Business Administration degree, with a concentration in Human Resources, from Kennesaw State University in 1995. He also earned several insurance and financial service designations including a FALU, FLMI, FLHC, AIRC, and ACS.
David also served on the Georgia Claims Association Board from 2000 – 2005 and served as the President during his final year on the Board. He is also a member of the Association of Home Office Underwriters (AHOU) and the Georgia Association of Home Office Underwriters (GAHOU).
Marianne Purushotham, FSA, MAAA
Marianne Purushotham is a member of the Watson Wyatt Insurance and Financial Services practice in Hartford, Connecticut. Marianne has a Masters Degree in applied mathematics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. Prior to joining Watson Wyatt, Purushotham worked for LIMRA International where she directed the individual life and disability insurance industry research programs. She was also responsible for managing the individual life, disability income, and long-term care insurance actuarial-experience studies including lapse and policyholder behavior.
Marianne also worked for MassMutual, New England Life, and Travelers where her responsibilities included management of the individual disability income financial reporting and valuation functions, pricing fixed and variable annuity products, and financial reporting and valuation for individual life insurance and annuity product lines.
John W. Riefler, CLU
John W. Riefler was an officer with AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company for 38 years. He held a wide range of management positions in the service delivery area of the company dealing with the life cycle of life insurance contract administration from underwriting to death claims. Additionally, he worked as Project Manager on many of the company’s product and system strategies, and was responsible for the development, implementation and review of life insurance procedures followed by producers and the National Operations Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Currently, John is a consultant to AXA’s Law Department, managing special market conduct projects.
John has extensive experience in the legal and regulatory aspects of life insurance and contract and business law, most recently serving as the legal and regulatory officer for service delivery, involved with such items as compliance, fraud, and anti-money laundering. He was also responsible for the coordination of state, SEC, and NASD Market Conduct/Audit Examinations, as well as other external and internal audits.
Dean Sarantos, FLMI
Dean Sarantos was most recently Chief Financial Officer of Senior Health Insurance Company of Pennsylvania. In this role, he oversaw the finance, accounting, and valuation-actuarial functions of the company, including their transition from its former parent, Conseco. At Conseco, Dean held the positions of Senior Director, Strategic Planning — Long Term Care, and at its Bankers Life and Casualty unit, Assistant Vice President — Financial Planning and Operations. Dean’s diverse financial experience also includes experience at Kraft Foods, Price Waterhouse, and Parker Hannifin.
Dean holds a B.S. in Business with a concentration in Accounting from Indiana University and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from Case Western Reserve University. He also holds an FLMI designation.
William R. Tarbart
Bill Tarbart has worked in the insurance industry for the majority of his professional career. Most recently, he has been an independent consultant working with hospitals, charities, broker dealers, and several insurance companies. He has also served in various management positions in field and home offices for Equitable Life Assurance Society and as Vice President for Equico Securities. Bill was the co-founder and Executive Vice President of Insurance Holding Company, working with Equitable and Merrill Lynch on responsibilities such as overseeing product development, creating a wholesaling operation, and hiring senior staff.
Bill earned a B.S. degree in economics from Wilkes College and also currently holds his General Securities Principal and insurance license. In addition to his work in the insurance industry, Bill has served on a variety of charity boards including the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation, the Memorial Medical Foundation for Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL, the Wilkes University Alumni Board and Board of Trustees, and the Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation.
Karen Terry, FLMI
Karen, who joined LIMRA in 1995, is a manager in the individual product research area which is responsible for research on individual life insurance and disability products in the U.S. and Canada. The Individual Product Research team conducts ongoing surveys on sales and marketing of individual products, and company practices studies that respond to the needs of LIMRA’s various constituencies.
Karen serves as a resource on industry performance measures to LIMRA staff, member companies, and the media. In addition she is staff representative to LIMRA’s Canadian Living Benefits Study Group. Karen is a graduate of the University of Maryland.
Elaine F. Tumicki, CLU, ChFC, LLIF
Elaine Tumicki directs LIMRA’s Product Research team, which is responsible for research on individual and group life, health, disability, and long-term care products. The Product Research team conducts ongoing surveys on sales, persistency, and product design, as well as marketing studies and company practices studies that respond to the needs of LIMRA’s various constituencies.
Elaine also serves as a resource on industry performance measures to LIMRA staff, member companies, and the media. She is staff representative to LIMRA’s Individual Life Insurance Study Group and DI/LTC Committee, and is a liaison to various other committees and study groups. Elaine is a graduate of the University of Connecticut.
William A. (Bill) Waldie Jr. is a Sr. Vice President; Government/Industry Relations and AFP Annuity Product Development for Transamerica Life Insurance Company's Annuity Products and Services Group. Bill is a thirty-one year veteran of the AEGON companies, and in 1980 was a co-developer of the Annuity Division. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1973.
Many people today are concerned about having saved enough for retirement and making what they do have last during their retirement years. For twenty-eight years, Bill has helped create annuity and life insurance product solutions and strategies to meet this important long term need. Bill works closely with Members of Congress, State Regulators, AEGON's Government Relations Staff and Industry Trade Associations to develop incentives and simple regulations to promote and support these vital solutions.
John W. Wells, FLMI, CLU
John was most recently President and CEO of Senior Health Insurance Company of Pennsylvania, and prior to that President of Conseco Senior Health Insurance Company. He has also worked at Bankers Life, Mutual of Omaha, and Jefferson Pilot Financial.
John’s insurance career of more than 25 years has included all areas but has been primarily focused on operational areas including underwriting, new business, medical, customer service, claims, IT, human resources, and community relations.
Wells holds a B.S. in business administration from Auburn University and earned his CPA designation and license from the State of Tennessee. His professional designations include Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) and Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
His professional affiliations include the Life Office Management Association (LOMA) where he has dedicated much of his time to training and education issues, including serving on the LL Global, LIMRA, and LOMA Board of Directors and the Education and Training Council. He is also a volunteer consultant for SCORE, a non-profit dedicated to the success of small businesses nationwide.
Lia G. Xhilone
Lia has been in the insurance industry for 26 years, including 22 years with MetLife. Lia is considered a subject matter expert in agency and bancassurance distribution, training, operations management and direct marketing. Her operations management experience includes leading life new business, product development, underwriting, and customer service teams. She began her career as a producer and after consistent sales successes, went on to support several regions and territories as a field trainer before her roles in agency management. She was then asked to lead a company-wide project that launched a leads generation and direct marketing organization that is still in place today. She was subsequently appointed to spearhead MetLife’s corporate US bancassurance startup which sold life, LTC and annuity products through regional banks.
Lia’s responsibilities included development of marketing, sales and product to be sold in the bank as well as recruitment and training of the sales and servicing organizations. Lia is particularly adept as a trainer and coach for both field and operations staff; she now manages her own firm, Xhilone and Associates, in Avon, Connecticut in the United States. Lia’s significant industry experience enables her to help her students improve their performance and KPI’s no matter their role in their organization. Lia’s growing client list includes companies in Asia, Oceania, and the U.S., and she is excited to be associated with LIMRA and LOMA. Lia is an avid traveler, and enjoys golf, tennis, and bicycle touring in her spare time.
