Data Clean Up Drive

Shannon Wortman
LOMA Registrar

In 2013 LOMA will have a new system that combines LOMANET and LOMALearn. In the meantime, we need your help with cleaning up the old data. You can help by:

  • Deleting any retired, terminated, or deceased students from your student records in LOMANET.
  • Ensuring that each active student has a valid e-mail address in LOMANET or LOMALearn.
  • Contacting LOMA if any of your Secondary Ed Reps or Secondary Locations in LOMANET are no longer needed and can be removed.

We’re happy to help. Give us a call at 1-800-ASK-LOMA or email us at education@loma.org for helpful tips on how to complete these activities.

Thanks,

New ALMI Promo Videos Available Online!

Kathryn Brown
Ed Rep Liaison

Hello!

As you know, we’re working diligently to promote the value of the ALMI program to employees within the industry. In an effort to help LOMA reach the younger generation of insurance professionals, I have created some exciting new promotional ALMI videos! I’m pleased to share them with you here — click on the links to launch the videos.

I look forward to creating more of these and sharing them with you — and please feel free to share these with your employees! I will also be sending these links out in promotional e-mails in the near future.

Thanks again for all that you do to promote the ALMI within your company.

English as a Second Language

Miriam Orsina
Senior Associate
LOMA Education and Training Division

As the US population becomes more diverse, many insurance companies have more employees and customers who do not speak English as their first language. I'd like to know how companies are addressing this challenge.

Does your company have any training initiatives to help its employees communicate with and serve customers who do not have English as a primary language?

Or does your company offer any training in English as a second language (ESL) for its employees who do not have English as a primary language?

If you have information to share, please send it to community@loma.org. I'll summarize the responses and post them on this site later. Thank you for your help.

Education Fairs in 2011!

Kathryn Brown
Ed Rep Liaison

Education Fairs are a great way to promote LOMA Education to your employees. If you've never hosted an Education Fair, or would like to learn what they're all about, Listen to our Webinar here! One of our Member Solutions Associates shared important information as to what makes an Education Fair successful, and how LOMA can support you in this exciting initiative! Many of our Ed Reps already host these types of events, and we'd also love to hear your success stories!

We've also built out a brand-new section of our LOMA.org website to provide you with all of the information you'll need to host successful Education Fairs at your company. Check it out here! Thanks again for all that you do as a supporter of LOMA.

Have a question? Want to schedule an Ed Fair? E-mail community@loma.org.

Go Green with LOMA!

Kathryn Brown
Ed Rep Liaison

"Going Green" — it's a concept that we're all familiar with. It's also an initiative that we're putting into place here at LOMA, and you can partner with us in this endeavor! Lots of our Ed Reps post PDFs of our latest Education promo materials on their intranets. All of these flyers, brochures and other resources are currently available here. Of course, you can also order printed materials from PBD, but posting the electronic files is easy, fast, and of course, green!

At our Educational Overview session at the Annual Conference & Conferment, we heard lots of great ideas of how Ed Reps are going green at their companies...do you have any practices at your company that you would like to share? Every little bit helps, especially when it comes to preserving the planet! Just let us know — we'd love to hear from you.

E-mail us at community@loma.org and we’ll post your ideas.

Feedback on Need 2 Know Courses — LOMA 281 and LOMA 291

Shannon Wortman
LOMA Registrar

Since 2008, the Need 2 Know courses have been an option for students to take in place of LOMA 280 and LOMA 290. LOMA 281, Meeting Customer Needs with Insurance and Annuities, and LOMA 291, Improving the Bottom Line: Insurance Company Operations, are online, modularized, and include exams that are not proctored. Some companies may still require the proctored exam and so they will continue to require LOMA 280 and LOMA 290. This new program has been very popular for the companies that have embraced the new format. To date we have had over 3,400 enrollments in LOMA 281 and LOMA 291. And the feedback we have received on this program has been outstanding.

Please share your thoughts or student feedback on these courses. Also, what steps did you take to make the switch from the traditional LOMA 280 and LOMA 290 courses to the Need 2 Know program? Let us know by e-mailing community@loma.org.

Response from an Ed Rep

As a new Ed Rep for our organization, I have quickly been coming up to speed on all of LOMA's offerings and ultimately decided, how best to promote than by hands-on experience. I didn't think twice about which format to do knowing my preferred learning styles.

I enrolled in LOMA 281, selected the 6 week study plan (fully intending to take about 12 weeks) and completed it in 3 weeks. I have already enrolled in LOMA 291, though haven't started.

The modular design, video vignettes, frequent assessments and the "What Do You Think...?" all worked extremely well for me. I retained so much more than I really thought I would at the end.

I have already suggested to a couple of employees to give it a shot instead of 280/290. I am hoping to rekindle LOMA interest here and get our enrollment numbers up and 281/291 could be the ticket that helps spark that.

Thanks!

Ideas to Increase Student Participation

Shannon Wortman
LOMA Registrar

A question that Ed Reps often have for each other is how to increase overall participation in LOMA education and training programs. Many companies require different courses or designations for Employee Development Plans, or even for promotions. Other Ed Reps have said that participation starts with Senior Management promoting the importance of education throughout the company.

How do you influence participation or the overall education culture at your company? How can you get students to take courses beyond LOMA 280 and LOMA 290? What have you tried that worked or did not work?

E-mail us at community@loma.org and we’ll post your ideas.

Ideas for Recognizing New Designees

Shannon Wortman
LOMA Registrar

Ed Reps are very creative and have wonderful ideas for recognizing new designees. Each Ed Rep matches the recognition to the company’s culture. And most individuals really enjoy being honored publicly.

The recognition that students enjoy the most is a cash bonus or for those earning the FLMI or FFSI, a trip to LOMA’s Annual Conference. The Annual Conference is something the student will never forget and promotes loyalty to your company. Other companies have quarterly or annual award luncheons or ceremonies for new designees. Some Ed Reps have found ways to acknowledge students without spending a lot of money. Posting names on intranets or in company newsletters is an inexpensive way to promote education and indentify individual designees. Others have managers present the diplomas at staff meetings.

We would love to hear how your company celebrates those who earn LOMA designations and other accomplishments of employees. Please share your ideas, whatever your budget may be.

E-mail us at community@loma.org and we’ll add your ideas to this list.

Response from an Ed Rep

We will announce who passes an exam in our weekly newsletter. We also host a quarterly LOMA Awards breakfast to the ones who have earned a LOMA designation. We will also invite their supervisor and manager to join in on the fun!
