“I’m a new middle manager moving from banking to annuities operations. I need to get up to speed fast!”

“I’ve just hired a key senior programmer with all the right skills and certifications, but she’s new to life insurance. Her credibility with our internal clients is dependent on her ability to quickly speak their language and understand their business issues.”

WHAT IS INSURANCE IMMERSION?

Insurance Immersion is an intensive, interactive, 2½-day learning experience that delivers industry-specific knowledge essential to performing successfully in the North American life insurance, annuity, and retirement products environment.
This innovative immersion approach, originally used to quickly provide fluency in foreign languages, offers several key benefits:
  • It’s effective. In lively and fast-paced sessions, program participants live and breathe insurance for 2 ½ days as they move from understanding to application and synthesis. Insurance Immersion is an ideal learning environment for people who recently have been assigned a middle management or consultative professional role in a life, annuity or retirement products company but have limited or no insurance experience.
  • It's fast. The program involves 6-8 hours of individual pre-class preparation and 2 ½ days of intensive instruction and class work, enabling participants to accelerate their transition to their new job and make positive contributions quickly and effectively.
  • It’s comprehensive. A committee of insurance industry leaders has identified the critical course topics and learning outcomes. Insurance Immersion offers participants access to LOMA’s 80+ years of industry know-how.

Insurance Immersion is ‘cutting edge’ training:

  • The program’s instructors are subject matter experts highly respected for their real-world experience and knowledge of the industry.
  • Class size is limited to 20 students who have been recommended by their companies and carefully screened by LOMA to ensure a good fit for the immersion experience.
  • Immersion is not for the passive learner! Participants must be ready to join in structured group learning activities, lively discussion, and networking.

WHAT DOES INSURANCE IMMERSION COVER?

Through this one-of-a-kind program, participants gain an understanding of the unique nature of the life insurance industry—the business strategy, industry structure, operations, products, terminology, communication systems, internal controls and more—and benefit from peer networking opportunities. Program content includes:
  • Industry overview
  • Ethical behavior, compliance, governance, and control
  • Administration, operational efficiencies and risks, & service delivery
  • Product profitability, product design, and marketing
  • Enterprise risk management and company profitability
  • Tools for continued professional development

PLUS – “Hot topics” for presentation and discussion selected by participants and their managers

NOTE: This program does not cover the health insurance industry sector.

WHO SHOULD TAKE INSURANCE IMMERSION?

Many life insurance companies today are hiring managers and technical professionals from outside the life industry. To gain credibility, operate efficiently and make important business decisions, these associates need to be empowered with industry knowledge. Insurance Immersion is designed to meet this critical need. Insurance Immersion is perfect for:
  • Recently-assigned mid-level managers who have responsibility for a major unit in a North American life, annuity, or retirement products company but have limited or no industry experience
  • Experienced/credentialed technical professionals (IT, HR, Training, Accounting, etc.) previously employed in another industry or industry sector who will benefit from a broad understanding of the North American life, annuity, and retirement products industry

As a guideline, a participant should attend within 2-12 months of being assigned to a new position.

The unique objectives of this program mean it is not for everyone.  A highly interactive learning environment, Insurance Immersion is most beneficial if the participants have similar job levels and experience. This program is not intended for first line supervisors or senior executives.

A candidate’s background and industry experience would most likely fall into one of the following categories:
  • No industry experience, but a seasoned manager or a fully credentialed technical professional coming from another industry or industry sector
  • Insurance industry experience, but not in the product line to which he or she is newly assigned
  • Life insurance product line experience in a limited area, but virtually no exposure to factors requiring breadth of vision, such as broad industry issues and cross-functional linkages

If you have any questions about whether you should apply, please contact LOMA via e-mail at  insuranceimmersion@loma.org or phone at 770-984-6451.

HOW DOES INSURANCE IMMERSION WORK?

Beginning with the application process, the candidate can expect a highly participatory learning process.

Accepted participants meet with their management sponsor before the session to identify individual learning objectives, management expectations and topics for additional learning and discussion.

To assure a level playing field and help prepare for active and meaningful participation, attendees complete 6-8 hours of pre-session work. This work includes:
  • Taking online courses and completing directed reading assignments
  • Gathering company-specific data and learning tools
  • Researching industry-specific topics for discussion and formal presentation at the program

Throughout the 2 1/2 day session, participants are immersed in an intensive learning experience, obtaining instruction from experienced insurance professionals, participating in structured group learning activities and panel discussions, and learning by teaching and presenting topics researched as part of their pre-work assignments.

At the end of the session, participants review their individual goals and obtain personalized recommendations for continued professional development. They receive tips on how to keep up with emerging industry developments. They return to their jobs with the benefits of peer networking and the employee development, research, and information sharing resources that LOMA membership provides.
