Education Section Annual Meeting
December 4, 2013
Overview & Highlights
Fraud comes in many forms, from bogus charities and fake vendors to even a long time trusted employee. How can auditors catch these fraudsters? Being aware of fraud red flags — warning signs that something might be wrong — is the first step. Once the red flag is identified, an investigation is the next step, which requires appropriate techniques, evidence and the ability to determine when outside assistance is required.
Director, Special Investigations Unit
Valerie Howes is responsible for managing the internal and external investigations for Foresters North American operations and identifying and recommending fraud prevention, detection and correction procedures and providing anti-fraud awareness training for Foresters personnel.
Senior Fraud Examiner
The Co-operators Group, Regina
Peter Brand has been working as an auditor and fraud investigator in the life insurance industry since 1992. Currently, he is responsible for the investigation and coordinating the investigations of employee, agent and provider frauds within the Co-operators Group of Companies.
