The Financial Management Section provides a forum for individuals responsible for the financial management needs of their companies. This section covers a broad range of topics such as budgeting, cost control, management information, financial reporting, and profitability analyses.

International Financial Reporting Standards

The conversion to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is literally months away for Canadian life insurance companies. This session will focus on the key issues facing life insurance companies in Canada as they finalize their work to convert to IFRS and provide advice on successfully managing the final stages of implementation. As the initial conversion is completed life insurers will need to turn their attention to the second wave of changing IFRS standards. This session will also explore the key impacts on Canadian life insurers of recent and imminent changes to IFRS including the IASB project to develop Insurance Contracts measurement standards and changes to financial instruments standards.

Capital Management

The heightened regulatory attention (for example Solvency II) and increased consumer scrutiny on insurers capital management practices requires insurers to re-examine and update their practices and policies. Accordingly, insurers need to adopt a Capital Deployment Strategy and an Enterprise Risk Management framework that enables them to proactively manage their capital and stay ahead of these regulatory changes. This session is targeted at finance executives and will provide a practical perspective on the adoption of these frameworks, the associated benefits to life insurers, and an update on the global regulatory drivers and their capital implications.
