LOMA's Competency Dictionary
Attention HR management! Specific behaviors
determine the level of competency required for effective performance for each job at your
company. LOMA's Competency Dictionary can help you get a head start in uncovering
the critical competencies for non-managerial jobs in your organization.
You can use LOMA's Competency Dictionary to build effective
competency models. This tool can have a great impact on various HR functions, including
research and selection, training and development, and performance management.
The LOMA dictionary is the product of an extensive evaluation of many
organizations, roles and jobs through interviews, focus groups and surveys. Hundreds of
managers and employees provided input to LOMA, as did various organizational strategists,
futurists and psychologists.
From this research, LOMA staff developed a competency framework of 14
broad competencies encompassing 46 specific competencies. Here are a few examples of
important competencies covered:
Willingness to learn
Stress tolerance
Initiative
Adaptability
Multi-tasking
Motivating others
The LOMA Competency Dictionary includes a detailed definition of each
competency, along with specific behaviors that further define each competency at a basic,
moderate, and high level of performance.
By using this dictionary, you can:
Use a research-based inventory of competencies with confidence as a
starting point in creating competency models
Easily adapt the LOMA competencies to your organization for alignment
with your company's strategic goals and direction
Save time by getting a jump-start on identifying specific behaviors
associated with competencies important to your organization
You may be able to apply the dictionary's competencies to your company's
jobs without any change, or you may need to customize some competencies to fit your
environment.
The dictionary explains how to create competency models, how to create a
communication strategy for implementing the models, monitoring and evaluating the
competency models, and potential pitfalls.
