The
FLMI Program
The Chinese FLMI Program (Fellow, Life Management Institute) will consist of 10
university-level courses covering subject areas related to insurance and
business administration:
Principles of Insurance: Life, Health and
Annuities
Life and Health Insurance Company Operations
Insurance Administration
Marketing Life and Health Insurance
Management Principles and Practices
Information Management in Insurance Companies
Financial Services Environment
Accounting and Financial Reporting in Life and Health Insurance Companies
Managing for Solvency and Profitability in Life and Health Insurance Companies
Legal Aspects of Life and Health Insurance
Textbooks, study guides, and examinations for
these courses are being translated during the next few years, with input from
insurance experts in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. Reviewers from
insurance companies and universities will assure that the FLMI courses to meet
the unique needs of insurance education and training in Chinese-speaking
regions.
Simplified
or Traditional Character versions
Students can choose simplified or traditional character versions of

Chinese
FLMI 280 (Second
Edition)
This first course introduces the principles of insurance, the process of
becoming insured, and the policyowner’s contractual rights. The course
includes information on the features of individual and group life insurance,
health insurance, and annuity products.
Study materials include the textbook Principles
of Health Insurance: Life, Health and Annuities and an accompanying Prep
Pak.

FLMI 290
This course describes the organization of
insurance companies and the environment in which they operate, focusing on
specific company operations such as marketing, actuarial, underwriting, and
financial activities.
Study material is the textbook Life and Health
Insurance Company Operations.

FLMI 320
This course covers marketing principles and the
function of marketing as an integral aspect of the life and health insurance
industry.
Study material includes the textbook Life and Health
Insurance Marketing and an accompanying Prep Pak.
Chinese
FLMI 340
This course provides an understanding of the
importance and nature of information management in insurance companies. It
discusses the components, types, and uses of information systems, as well as the
use of decision sciences and statistical tools.
Study material includes the textbooks Information
Systems: A Managerial Approach and Statistics and Decision Sciences in
Information Management plus an accompanying Prep Pak.

FLMI 301
This course describes the insurance administration activities involved in
individual and group life and health insurance focusing an underwriting,
reinsurance, claim administration, and customer service.
The study material includes the textbook Insurance
Administration and an accompanying Prep Pak; both available in January 2002.

benefit from the ACS Program. It is appropriate for anyone who interacts with
internal or external customers on a regular basis.
The Chinese ACS consists of four
Chinese FLMI courses plus the Chinese ACS 100:
Chinese ACS 100
This course is designed to give students a solid base of knowledge in
understanding customer service concepts and strategies, building a customer
service culture, developing a customer service strategy, understanding customers
and customer service research, establishing and measuring the performance of
customer service systems, and developing a dedicated customer service
staff.
The study material includes the textbooks Customer
Service in Insurance: Principles and Practices and Customer Service in
Insurance: Improving Your Skills plus an accompanying Prep Pak.
Simplified or Traditional Character
version
All Chinese ACS courses are offered in traditional and simplified Chinese
characters.
Awards
Level One Certificate: Students earn the
Level One Certificate by successfully completing FLMI 280 and FLMI 290.
FLMI diploma: Students
earn the FLMI diploma by successfully completing all 10 of the FLMI Courses. If
students earn a grade of 85 or higher on each exam, and never fail and retake
any exam, then they will earn the FLMI diploma With Distinction.
ACS diploma: Students
earn the ACS diploma by successfully completing all 5 courses in the ACS
Program. If students earn a grade of 85 or higher on each exam, and never fail
and retake any exam, then they will earn the ACS diploma With Honor.
